How can psychotherapy help?

Psychotherapy can feel different for everyone. Some of the reasons someone may seek support are:

  • distressing life events, such as loss of loved ones, separations and divorce

  • traumatic experiences, like war, abuse or witnessing of violence

  • distressing psychological symptoms, like low mood or anxiety

  • difficulties in relationships

  • wish for self growth or accomplishment of specific goals

  • wish for a better understanding of ourselves

When the above situations impact on different areas of our life and make our daily life harder (eg avoidance of situations/places, isolation, lack of enjoyment, changes in eating and sleep) and we have not managed to find ways to move on, it may help to start psychotherapy in order to find new ways of thinking and managing difficult emotions. The psychotherapist can keep their distance from our problems and offer a space where we can share what is important without feeling judged or misunderstood. This can help us start fresh in a way that works better for us.

How long does a session last?

Sessions last 50 minutes.

What is the initial process when parents get in touch?

When a parent gets in touch, we plan an initial brief conversation on the phone (10-15’) to get an idea of how I can help. Following that, I will let you know if I feel I am the right person to offer support, otherwise I will aim to refer you to a different specialist professional and detail next steps.

If we agree to meet, we will have one or two initial sessions with just the parents to focus on family and personal history. We will think about your worries, what your child finds hard but also their interests and strengths.

After the initial sessions, I will meet with your child, either with you or on their own. We will then decide if it would be most beneficial that we focus on parent, family or child sessions. If you are getting in touch for your adolescent and they prefer to speak with me from the beginning of the process, we can make the arrangements and they can come to their first session on their own or with the adult of their choice.

What happens after I get in touch for personal therapy as an adult?

When you get in touch, we will plan a brief call on the phone (10-15’) for some initial questions. Following that, I will let you know if I feel I am the right person to offer support, otherwise I will aim to refer you to a different specialist professional and detail next steps.

In the first sessions I will ask about your life, what is important to you and your therapy goals. We will then think more specifically about the focus of the sessions so that we can revisit your goals often and see if what we are doing is working for you or if there need to be changes.

For how long will I need to come see you?
The duration of therapy varies depending on the reason someone decides to come and the goals we set together. Some clients benefit from brief psychotherapy, which can be used as a form of counselling or their introduction to therapy.  brief psychotherapy can be targeted and last a few weeks or months (eg for support with managing phobias using cognitive behavioural therapy). Finally, some clients choose to invest in long-term therapy with the aim to understand more about themselves, their behavioural patterns and ways of relating to others.

I always try to support clients to understand which strategies and alternative thought processes work for them so that they can soon feel relief from destressing symptoms and feel ready to support themselves and independently manage difficult feelings.

What is the cost of the sessions

Sessions cost 50 euros. Alternative costs can be considered for a period of time if clients are under financial duress.

Is there the option of online sessions

Yes, the option of online sessions is available for people who cannot access in person sessions

What are the rules of confidentiality?

As a licenced psychologist in Greece (4200/2013), I am bound by the ethics laws of my profession, which means I am not allowed to share what is mentioned in session with any other parties.

Exceptions to confidentiality:

-if there is evidence of potential danger to others by my client

-if there is evidence of danger to self

-if there is evidence that someone underage may be a victim of abuse

In these cases, I would need to contact services in the country/area of origin of the afflicted person and get in touch with the parents of underage clients. This is due to my professional duty of care to my client and the public.
