Adult psychotherapy

As a psychotherapist I have noticed throughout my clinical experience with adults that most of us find it hard to realise that our behaviour often revolves around a number of patterns , which accompany us from a young age. These ways of understanding and coping may have been very helpful in some occasions in order for our needs to be fulfilled but for some reason they are not helpful anymore. They have become mostly obstacles in moving forward.

For example, a child growing up with a preoccupied parent who did not have the capacity to cover the many demands of parenting a small child, learns that in order to get someone's attention they need to try very hard (eg yelling, crying). As an adult, this person may automatically resort to similar patterns of behaviour, which can result in difficulties in romantic relationships, regular confict with friends and family, not being able to keep jobs.

My therapeutic goal is to offer my undivided attention to a client and support them to raise their own conclusions, set goals and see themselves in a more positive light, initially through my eyes. I believe that the psychotherapist often is similar to the 'good enough parent' who accepts their child unconditionally while also challenging them so that they can evolve. The therapeutic relationship acts as the framework for reflecting on the way you manage important relationships. You can bring to the sessions topics you have planned to discuss or just bring up what comes to your mind in the moment. We will try coping strategies that focus on calming the body first, like breathing exercises and relaxation techniques or alternative ways of thinking and analysing situations. Both of these are aiming to bring some relief to distressing symptoms, such as anxiety or negative thoughts.
